Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt recently adopted a little boy from an orphanage in Vietnam. What can parents that adopt children from foreign countries do to help them embrace their heritage? Many of these parents worry they’ve somehow done their kids wrong by taking them away from their culture. However, there are a number of things you can do to help your child retain their culture.Â
First learn all you can about native traditions, food, activities, religion, rituals, etc. and seek out resources in your area. For example, one family we know adopted a child who is part Japanese. They take him to local Japanese festivals, enroll him in martial arts, eat often at Japanese restaurants – they’ve even decorated his room with Japanese characters, colors, and accessories. He is now taking Japanese language classes and has visited Japan twice.Â
By helping kids embrace their culture, children can retain their heritage and learn to love their new country, giving them the best of both worlds.
