A Proper Tea Party

05.25.07

Tea Time for Kids

The recent visit to the U.S. by Queen Elizabeth reminds us of hosting tea parties for our friends and family when we were little. So here’s a little advice on “How to Host a Proper Tea Party.”

Tea time begins at 4:00 p.m. You will want to have a tea table with a large tray at each end, one will hold the tea pot and various teas, the other will be for teacups and saucers. You will also need small tea plates for finger foods. Include napkins and spoons for stirring tea. Serve tea sandwiches of cream cheese and a variety of cookies and little cakes. Cover the table with a fine linen tablecloth and add a cheerful vase of flowers. This tea pot will make a great kids gift for any kids birthday.

You are now ready to serve. The host asks the guest of honor or a good friend to pour the tea. There should be one pot of very strong tea, and one pot of hot water at each pouring area. You ask the guest how they would like their tea – strong, medium, or weak. Then you mix the water with the tea to get the right solution. You should have milk, sugar, and lemon available at either side.

Next, enjoy….even if your guests are only your stuffed animal friends!

Parenting Your Tweens: Watch Out for Change Back Behavior

05.15.07

Dinnerware for kids

You’ve decided to lay down the law and actually enforce some of the family rules on your tweens. You share this news with the kids, who groan in protest. Don’t worry! This is normal. Wouldn’t it be nice, though, if these little darlings would say, “Oh thank you Mom and Dad, I’ve been just waiting and hoping and praying that you would get stricter.” Not gonna happen.

When parents decide to tighten up on a few things, kids realize that the party is over. Instead of accepting it, they are going to test you, to see if you really mean it. This is called “change back behavior.” The kids want you to “change back” to the old system. If you want this new way of doing things to work, you need to make sure that whatever changes you begin, you are ready to see it through – regardless of your child’s reactions.

If you start to change things and then give in to the pressure of the change back behavior from the kids, you have made things worse than if you had done nothing at all. Making changes is a good thing to do. Just make sure you stick to your rules. And be sure to reward your child for appropriate behavior. Give her some beautiful art to hang on her wall. Lily Letters spell out a name or special word. Handcrafted of wood with rubbed, white painted finish and choice of yellow or pink ribbon will personalize any kid’s wall. Or how about “Art to Go” placemat, a canvas bound mat with soft black board surface that cleans easily with the included sponge.

Helping Adopted Foreign Children Embrace Their Culture

04.18.07

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pit Adopted

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt recently adopted a little boy from an orphanage in Vietnam. What can parents that adopt children from foreign countries do to help them embrace their heritage? Many of these parents worry they’ve somehow done their kids wrong by taking them away from their culture. However, there are a number of things you can do to help your child retain their culture.

First learn all you can about native traditions, food, activities, religion, rituals, etc. and seek out resources in your area. For example, one family we know adopted a child who is part Japanese. They take him to local Japanese festivals, enroll him in martial arts, eat often at Japanese restaurants – they’ve even decorated his room with Japanese characters, colors, and accessories. He is now taking Japanese language classes and has visited Japan twice.

By helping kids embrace their culture, children can retain their heritage and learn to love their new country, giving them the best of both worlds.
